Outdoor Learning Skills Development
“All children and young people should enjoy high quality play opportunities, particularly outdoor free play in stimulating spaces with access to nature, on a daily basis in school, nursery and early learning and childcare.”
Play Strategy for Scotland: Our Action Plan (2013) Scottish Government
Nature Unlimited is committed to increasing opportunities for children to learn, grow and thrive through playing outdoors, particularly in woodlands and other rich natural environments.
Our training, which is underpinned by the SHANARRI indicators for wellbeing, will give you the skills and confidence to take your group outdoors, connect with nature and be active.
Training sessions can be tailored to your settings’ requirements and can include:
Risk Benefit Assessment – how to risk assess a natural environment/woodland & how to risk assess activities which may be seen as hazardous, such as tree climbing, and the benefits for children’s learning & development within them.
Facilitating free play in a natural environment – Ideas and activities to support mental & physical health, skills development, confidence and resilience.
Linking outdoor play to EYFS curriculum – games, activities & resources to support development in literacy, numeracy, science, art, music etc.
Youth Leader training – games and activities to build confidence in taking your group outdoors, encouraging participants to be active, reduce screen time and connect with each other and nature.
Nature Connection & Sustainabilty – we come to your site and work with you to improve your Outdoor Learning provision, such as developing the school grounds and using your local natural area to support outdoor play & learning.
Staff skills and confidence – we offer certificated training in using tools and fire and also offer practical training such as erecting a shelter, knot tying skills, fauna & flora identification etc
All training takes place in venues with access to a woodland or natural environment close by, in various locations across the Scottish Borders and Lothians.
Our qualified trainers have a wealth of experience in working with groups of all ages in the outdoors.
